The veterinarian sciences are key to keep animals healthy by providing a wide range of treatments and medication options. This includes preventative measures that aim to preclude health declines or protective measures such as for example vaccinations to protect animals from harm. Despite the importance of honey bees for human food production and ecosystem stability, such possibilities to monitor bee health are not available. We have started to develop electronic sensors that are deployed inside honey bee colonies and that record various measures that are linked to colony performance and health. Our aim is to not only record such data, but to use approaches of artificial intelligence and machine learning to develop algorithms that can detect the earliest possible onsets of declines, identify the possible causes and warn bee keepers before colonies start to collapse and when counter measures are still possible.
