Name: Sakshi Watts
Function: PhD Candidate
Research: I am a Ph.D. candidate studying the social immunity and defense mechanisms of honey bees. My research focuses on communication within colonies, particularly by examining social behavior and vibroacoustic signals. I am broadly interested in the fundamental principles that underlie social organization and what makes a social insect society a truly eusocial system.
My work also compares commercial honey bee colonies and Californian hybridized populations, which provide a compelling contrast from evolutionary and genetic perspectives due to their differing life histories and management contexts. By studying these systems, I aim to better understand how variation in genetics and lifestyle may shape colony-level immunity, communication, and defense behaviors.
