Name: Prof. Kerry Mauck
Research: I am currently involved in projects to discover chemical mediators of innate and social immunity in honeybees. Using survivor bees and managed bees, I am assisting several students with efforts to characterize volatile and non-volatile chemical changes in larvae and adult bees in response to pathogen and parasite infections. I am also working with a student to characterize effects of pathogens on bee hormones that mediate different behavioral and physiological states. These data will help us to understand mechanisms by which survivor bees can tolerate stressors and provide phenotyping targets for introducing survivor bee traits into managed bee stock. Chemical biomarkers associated with stressors, including pathogens and parasites, may also be exploited as part of our sensor project to detect and alert bee keepers to hive threats before they cause hive failure.
