Name: Boerge Hemmerling
Function: Assistant Professor, Physics and Astronomy, University of California, Riverside, 2017 - present
Research: I am currently involved in the development of a smart beehive with the goal to monitor the health of a bee colony. The plan is to add novel sensors to a beehive that monitor various key parameters, including the weight of individual frames for honey production, the in- and outgoing traffic of bees, the sound of the collective bee hive, and the presence and density of specific biomolecules. The data of these sensors will be used to develop models for indicators of unhealthy or disruptive behaviour of the beehive to alert the beekeeper. Newley developed sensors can also be added to a sensor platform that is developed by CIBER and known as EBeeVet.
